Job Description


This position's responsibilities fall into the category of maintaining as well as developing the Coater process control systems.  The Coater Engineer will support the Coater Operators, Glass Processors, and Maintenance and is in daily contact with the other Coater staff to discuss production activities, quality, process, operating procedures, policy, complaints, and personnel problems.

This position reviews and analyzes Coater process control system and makes corrective action as necessary.  The incumbent keeps the Coater Manager apprised of serious process control issues as well as significant potential improvements. The incumbent must be able to work independently and multitask in a fast-paced production environment. The incumbent must be able to respond immediately to production problems while maintaining a long term focus on improvement

The incumbent continually seeks ways to improve the process through projects. This is accomplished, in part, by staying abreast of current technology as well as staying in contact with other counterparts at other VITRO Coaters and replicating improvement when appropriate.  The incumbent must be able to manage complex projects taking them from concept to reality.  This can include initiating and coordinating project work in areas other than computer or electrical areas.  The incumbent must effectively utilize resources outside of the department.  This includes VITRO’s central Engineering and Research, outside contractors, vendors and Plant Maintenance.



Job Requirements

The incumbent must have a degree in electrical engineering or computer science and minimum of five (5) years of applicable industrial experience.  A thorough understanding of the application and programming of PLC, HMI and motor drives as required. The incumbent must possess an understanding of a wide variety of industrial sensors and their application.  The incumbent must have a thorough knowledge of machine safety and the application of safety devices.

2.   Quality – Maintain and encourage a strong quality process in the Coater Department which emphasizes the need for every employee to achieve conformance to defined requirements 100% of the time.  This includes compliance to established procedures and specifications.

3.   Production – Coordinating daily Coater operations to include providing technical expertise to Coater operations to assure safe and efficient daily operation.  This includes being readily available during off-shifts to provide support, oversight and direction to Operators or Maintenance when issues arise.

4.   Training - Provides training to Operators, Glass Processors and Maintenance on unplanned downtime in an effort to reduce down time.

5.   Staff – Support all Coater Operators, Maintenance and supporting staff to ensure a smooth running and efficient operation that meets the plant and department objectives and goals.
