Vitro Architectural Glass is looking for a Microscopy Team Leader for the Glass Technology Center in Harmar, PA. The Team Leader will lead the microscopy team in use of electron microscopy, optical microscopy, FTIR, AFM/SPM and profilometry to provide analysis for R&D, production support, and field return root cause investigations. The Team Leader will also Explore/develop new methods and characterization techniques as needed to support R&D efforts. In addition, the Team Leader will collaborate with other GTC analytical labs and R&D associates to solve customer problems.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

  • Contribute to R&D team efforts to further fundamental understanding of glass surfaces, coating microstructure, and defect formation mechanisms.
  • Prioritize business critical needs while balancing all customer requests for timely and relevant microscopy analysis, to include adjusting for rush and urgent rush sample submissions with appropriate communication to analysts and customers as needed.
  • Ensure proper training and procedures are in place and adhered to for safe operations, security of IP, and accurate analysis in the microscopy lab.
  • Promote microscopy lab capabilities through seminars and presentations at R&D team meetings.
  • Explain advantages and limitations of appropriate microscopy methods and assist customers in selection of methods to meet needs in a timely and effective manner.
  • Cultivate relationships with key customers to ensure clear communication and understanding of project needs.
  • Maintain network of external resources at universities and analytical labs for supplemental analysis during high volume workload and to augment in-house characterization techniques.
  • Provide weekly updates on team activities and monthly summaries highlighting impactful microscopy lab activities.

Job Requirements

Job Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science or related degree
  • Minimum 5 years work experience after Ph.D. defense, 10 preferred
  • Specialization or substantial experience in microscopy techniques, primarily SEM-EDX, also optical microscopy, stylus profilometry, AFM/SPM, infrared microscopy, understanding of TEM a plus
  • Direct experience with inorganic CVD or PVD thin film materials deposition and/or characterization preferred
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities and work to a schedule
  • Ability to supervise full time and contract employees
