Job Description


Reporting directly to the Float Process Department Manager and indirectly to the Hot End Team Leader, the Tank Shift Manager administers, directs, and supervises all activities in the Tank, on the Shift according to established operating parameters, in order to meet management policies and objectives with respect to productivity, quality, costs, safety, housekeeping, customers, and employee relations.

Key Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Provides direction to the crew personnel. Production data and quality reports will be monitored and analyzed in conjunction with visual inspections and interaction with crew associates to develop corrective actions to maintain process stability and quality standards.  Serious or unusual circumstances will be reported to the Tank Day Staff and Tank Team Leader for directions.
  • Works closely with the Tank Day Staff to make sure that process operating instructions are understood and correctly implemented on the crew. Provides technical leadership to the crew, and clearly communicates observations, results, and exceptions as needed to the Tank Day Staff and wareroom crew supervision. 
  • In addition to monitoring daily operations, the Manager will be assigned process improvements. 
  • Maintains a continuity of operations by holding to outline procedures and parameters, and has complete authority to act in an emergency in the absence of the Float Process Manager. 
  • Makes frequent daily visits to all areas of the operation to oversee performance of manpower and equipment. 
  • Maintains a complete and accurate log of all activities occurring within the department, on the shift, such as speeds, yields, throughputs, quality etc. Up-to-date personnel records for his crew are also maintained.
  • Guides and coordinates the activities of subordinates as related to production, in the performance of their duties and delegates to them that degree of authority necessary for this purpose. This includes coordinating the weekly scheduling and daily distribution of manpower on the shift conducting periodic reviews and coaching sessions with subordinates, monitors the counseling of production employees, counsels production employees and exempt personnel on crew and assists foreman where disciplinary action is required.
  • Assists in the interviewing of new employees and in the appraisal of employees for promotion and coordinates training, safety and housekeeping programs on the crew to assure maximum performance. The Manager also conducts investigations, prepare reports as directed and maintains an accurate overtime list.

Job Requirements

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s of Science degree in a related field, or equivalent in a technical field. In lieu of a Bachelor’s of Science degree, incumbent must have 4 years in manufacturing experience, and 2 years as a lead person.
  • Demonstrated solid supervisory skills, and must demonstrate exceptional leadership ability.
  • Supervisory experience in a production environment is preferred, along with the ability to work cohesively with Union Leadership team to resolve day-to-day issues.

  • Ability to work with little or no supervision, to take immediate action to resolve problems, to adapt to change, and to train and learn from others
