The Environmental Health and Safety Technician is responsible for providing cost effective in-house employee health services including medical surveillance, disability management, wellness, competent emergency medical treatment, workers compensation case administration, and medical records administration in a professional manner.  The EHS technician performs numerous clerical duties and other related duties.  This position is responsible for directing and coordinating occupational and non-occupational medical management activities for Fresno Vitro employees.

 

  1. Prepare all necessary medical documentation including, but not limited to the following: Vitro Injury Accident Report, treatment log, OSHA log, employee medical/injury records, worker's compensation records, and updated list of employees off work due to Workers Compensation and Long Term Disability.  Have routine contact with all employees, including supervision, plant physician, visitors, suppliers, contractors, and TPA.
  2. Maintain all medical records in a confidential manner, and input into the Vitro Intelex database.  Update records with all status changes.  Responsible for retaining all records in compliance with all federal, state and local regulations.  Maintain log of medical history file review requests.  Make and send copies of medical records and X-rays on request of employee.
  3. Responsible for managing all workers comp cases, which includes: communicating with the adjusters, monitoring cases to ensure closure within a timely period and minimize costs, establishing quarterly workers comp reviews.
  4. A member of the Medical Emergency Response Team, providing emergency medical treatment and follow-up as required. Also ensures readiness for routine and emergency treatment. Must have firsthand knowledge of the plant layout, procedures, and occupations to be able to act accordingly during an Coordinate scheduling CPR/First Aid/AED/Bloodborne pathogen training for Emergency Responders. 
  5. Responsible for the administration of the plant’s employee medical restriction program. Complete interactive process and maintain records for non-industrial injuries and personal injuries in regards to accommodation and restrictions. The list of accommodations needs to be maintained and current at all times.
  6. Renders immediate medical attention and/or referral to employee incurring on-the-job injuries, personal illness, in accordance with professional standards and procedures outlined in the plant physician’s standing orders. Schedule appointments with specialists when referrals made by plant physician. 
  7. Keeps record of Work Related injury/illness. Ensure that proper medical release is provided to return to work, or forms for work restrictions provided.  Schedule return to work physicals.  Prepares weekly restricted duty report.  Process and document requests for restricted duty.  Schedule reassessments of restrictions as appropriate.  Communicates employee status and work restrictions to appropriate members of supervision.
  8. Coordinates pre-employment and return to work activities. Schedule pre-placement physical exams. Conducts drug screens per current Vitro drug testing requirements of new hires and random intoxicant screening programs.  Administer respiratory fit testing for new hires.
  9. Provide professional support for organizing, developing, promoting and implementing health education and wellness programs (e.g. know your numbers.) Conduct annual flu immunization programs for employees. Be able to coordinate the Blood Drive program, and assist Sr. EHS Specialist in other medical and safety related duties.  Must keep abreast of changes in occupational medicine by attending credited seminars or workshops. 
  10. Conduct on-going annual audiometric testing. Conduct annual respiratory fit testing, and supply respirators and filters as needed.  Document and discuss results with the employees.  Schedule retests as needed, also schedule appointments with plant physician and otolaryngologist when permanent STS occurs.
  11. Responsible for maintaining cleanliness, through good housekeeping, in the first aid station for performing job in a safe manner by adhering to all safety and housekeeping policies. Maintain adequate stock of authorized medical supplies, and all appropriate personal protective equipment for biological waste contamination.

Job Requirements

EHS tech works alone in office and on the plant floor.  Medical treatment room and examination rooms have the potential for exposure to blood borne pathogens.   Use of regular medical equipment such as BP cuff, stethoscope, etc., noise dosimeters, and air monitoring equipment. 

 

Standing / Walking/ Sitting

Lifting / Carrying – Occasionally lifting and carrying items under 20 pound range.

Pushing / Pulling – generally in short periods of 10 to 15 minutes will be required.

Climbing / Balancing – when moving over/under machinery or gaining access to locations in the plant requiring medical attention.

Twisting / Bending – The ability to bend at the waist and twist/rotate waist may be required.

Reaching / Handling – as needed

Feeling – The environmental factors noted above require the employee to be capable of detecting and reacting to the full range of potential hazards, specifically heat.

Talking / Hearing / Smelling –maintain awareness of his total environment when completing the functions noted, talking to team members, responding to oral instructions and emergency situations.  The ability to detect changes due to, for example, heat, and chemicals used in plant is critical to both normal and emergency situations.

Vision – Visual Acuity – Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less.

Depth Perception – Perceive three dimensionally.

Color Vision – Ability to identify and distinguish colors.
