Vitro Architectural Glass was formed from two globally proven legacies in commercial glass manufacturing: PPG and Vitro. It all started in 1883, when Captain John Baptiste Ford and John Pitcairn, Jr. founded Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company. Soon after, Roberto Sada Muguerza founded Vitro Glass in 1909. In 2016, the industry mantel that PPG carried in the US was passed to Vitro, establishing it as the largest glass manufacturer in North America.

We are looking for an Mechanical Engineer to join our growing Maintenance Department at Vitro Architectural Glass in Carlisle, PA. Responsibilities:

  • To assist the Maintenance department and the plant as a whole to ensure sound, safe engineering principals are used in the areas of design, installations, fabrication, start-up and modification of equipment, and to conduct maintenance activities such as trouble shooting, setting up critical spare parts, support of training programs, and ensure that jobs are performed in accordance with VITRO standards.
  • Attends monthly safety meetings whereby he/she contributes significantly to the planning of the Maintenance department activities and the formulation of Maintenance department safety policies.
  • Design and implement assigned production process modifications and engineering projects with increasing levels of size and importance, dependent of experience, to increase plant safety, quality, efficiency and to reduce variable costs.
  • Develop project plans related to engineering assignments and assist in developing short and medium range plans.  Provide information for Project Expense requests and ACT's related to plant and process engineering (including basic technical information, vendor contract, review of technical data and performance of technical study projects) to assist in decision-making for expensed and capital project improvements.
  • Utilize effective cost controls and sound engineering judgment in the timely planning and implementation of projects and other work assignments to contribute to plant productivity and profitability goals and objectives.
  • Assists in the preparation of cost estimates and authorization requests for management evaluation. He/She will design, test, and install new and improved mechanical equipment that will increase the efficiency and performance of plant production processes, and has extensive prior experience with layout, design, modeling, and analysis softwares.
  • Work directly with contractors and vendors to ensure understanding, capabilities, project requirements, and timing are clearly understood at the time of bidding through project completion.
  • Implement and emphasize safety, health and environmental control policies and procedures in both personal work activities and in equipment/process design and modifications, in order to contribute to and ensure plant/company safety and health goals are achieved.

Job Requirements

Basic Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering 
  • A minimum of 6 years of experience
  • Must have and demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of engineering principles and sound technical judgment

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written) for interactions with management, peers, other associates, vendors and contractors
  • Ability to trouble-shoot, analyze and resolve problems, plan, organize and share information
  • Ability to work independently and manage projects to established timelines as performance is measured against project goals and specific assignments
  • Ability to lead and effectively participate in teams
  • Ability to work without close supervision
