We are seeking a qualified Microscopist to join our Analytical Services Team at  the Vitro Glass Technology Center in Cheswick, PA (near Pittsburgh)

Main Activities/Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Work closely in microscopy team to use, optical microscopy, FTIR micro-spectroscopy, AFM/SPM, stylus profilometry and electron microscopy to provide analysis for R&D, production support, and field return root cause investigations for architectural glass, low-E coatings, and automotive glass products. This may include characterization for glass coating development, environmental/chemical weathering, storage/ transportation/installation damage, and stone/ream/contamination defects. The incumbent will collaborate with other analysts, R&D, Technical Services and Production to solve technical problems. Explore/develop new methods and characterization techniques as needed to support customer needs.
  • Contribute to R&D team efforts to further fundamental understanding of glass surfaces, coating microstructure, and defect formation mechanisms relevant to production and customer support.
  • Ability to balance all customer requests for timely and relevant microscopy analysis, to include adjusting for rush and urgent rush sample submissions in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to cultivate relationships with key customers to ensure clear communication and understanding of project needs. Ability to explain advantages and limitations of appropriate microscopy methods and guide customers in analysis requests.
  • Ability to interface with and seek out external resources at universities and contract labs when needed for supplemental analysis during high volume workload and to compliment in-house characterization techniques.
  • Ability to adhere to safe operations, security of IP, and accurate and timely analysis in the microscopy lab.

Job Requirements

Experience and Education:

  • PhD with 5 years’ experience or MS with 10 years’ experience in Materials Science, Engineering, Chemistry or related fields, direct experience in glass industry or contract laboratory preferred
  • Specialization or substantial hands-on experience required in microscopy techniques including optical microscopy, profilometry, AFM/SPM, infrared microscopy, SEM-EDX and sample preparation
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities and work to a schedule
  • Experience working under a laboratory information management system (LIMS) preferred
  • Experience with thin film materials deposition and/or characterization preferred
