This position is responsible for the safe and profitable operation of both the Flat Glass Distribution and Insulated Glass Fabrication portions of Vitro Architectural Glass Calgary operations. These responsibilities include managing the fabrication and delivery of flat glass products and, along with supporting staff, overseeing all aspects of operations with a focus on bottom-line profitability and customer satisfaction.

 

The incumbent ensures that the facility is in compliance with all aspects of Vitro’s Environment, Health and Safety requirements to ensure a safe and environmentally sound workplace. The incumbent is responsible for all EH&S functions including maintaining controls and resources necessary to ensure the positive outcome of internal and external audits as well as obtaining and maintaining safety standards and certifications.

 

The incumbent is responsible for financial control of the site, including building and maintaining the operating budget to deliver maximum operational efficiency and lowest possible cost, and making sure that spending is within budget, while meeting customer quality and delivery requirements.

 

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Provide the leadership, guidance and resources to achieve and maintain site compliance with all aspects of Vitro’s Environmental, Health and Safety requirements to ensure a safe and healthy work environment that prevents work-related accidents, illnesses and/or injuries.
  • Manage the Union employee training (18 to 20 members) and certification for overhead cranes, forklifts, and boom truck cranes.
  • Utilize planning, control and just-in-time concepts to ensure products are produced, packaged, and shipped in time to meet daily customer demands.
  • Manage the flat glass receiving and inventory to meet budget levels and customer demands.
  • Manage the maintenance of the Calgary facility and equipment on a daily, weekly, and monthly schedule.
  • Manage Calgary’s truck fleet and delivery schedules consisting of three Western Star boom trucks and trailers, four - 3 ton rack trucks.
  • Work closely with Branch Manager, sales staff, and sales order desk to meet customer requirements.
  • Manage and work closely with the IG Team Leader for the production and training of Calgary’s two Insulated Glass Production Lines (Intercept, foam spacer, metal spacer).
  • Utilize Lean, 5S, and good housekeeping practices to ensure efficient flow and minimum waste.
  • Champion cost control to ensure plant spending remains at or below established budget level

Job Requirements

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree or equivalent work experience
  • Engineering, Business Management, or related field
  • A minimum of 5 years experience in a key leadership role in a manufacturing environment is required and experience in flat glass distribution and insulated glass production is highly desirable

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: 

  • A strong background in Lean, 5S and Continuous Improvement is highly desirable.

  • The incumbent must have excellent organizational, managerial and interpersonal skills to make appropriate operating judgments involving safety, technical, engineering, financial, and human resource aspects of the operation.
