Job Description


The Plant Launch Engineer role is responsible to support all plant activities related to the launch of new products within the facility. The PLE is also responsible for supporting activities related to ongoing changes in production, part moves, and support for production quality issues during the initial startup of production. The PLE reports directly to the Plant Quality Manager.

Key Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Execution of manufacturing/plant portion of VITRO launch process – quote to grave
  • Recognition, assembly, and escalation (if needed) of support team required for successful development and launch within the plant; i.e. collaborates all cross-functions, including with Core Engineering & Plant Engineering on part & process development to meet customer requirements & performance metrics
  • Development, control, and tracking of manufacturing program timing elements that feed into the larger program timeline
  • Provides the ‘voice of the plant’ on the overall program management team (PMT)
  • Utilizes the processes and tools available to understand the product and process (i.e. PDM, Program Central Files, D/PFMEAs, Control Plans, error-proofing, specification reviews, measurements & capability data)
  • Understands and ensures efficient supply relationships (internal and external) critical to product development/launch, and engineering changes
  • Ownership, as assigned by PLM, of the program sample/development requirements, scheduling, material ordering, run execution, and part sign-off for quality, content verification
  • Responsible to ensure full PPAP submission to internal and customer expectations
  • Ensures implementation of changes within the plant; Requests changes on behalf of the plant; Assesses and responds to change requests impacting the plant – all per the ECR/ECN process
  • Ensures smooth transition of transferred parts (Part Moves) (plant to plant) per the VITRO part move process

Job Requirements

The PLE has primary responsibility to ensure successful execution of OEM program launches within the assigned manufacturing environment as assigned by the PLM at that facility. This includes developing and meeting project timelines for all manufacturing and plant quality deliverables as specified at acceptable cost and quality to satisfy the needs of both VITRO management and the appropriate OEM customer.

The incumbent must be highly organized and possess excellent communication skills (both written and verbal) as well as interpersonal skills of team management, participation, influencing others, negotiation skills, conflict resolution, leadership and problem-solving skills. Other critical skills include presentation skills, safety-orientation, customer service focus and being results-oriented.  He/she must be customer savvy, with the ability to interact with customers while balancing both VITRO and customer interests.

The incumbent must have a technical background such that he/she has a full understanding of product and process attributes (i.e. ability to understand prints, tolerances, GD&T, glass cold/hot end and/or value-add process parameters). It is preferred to have a four-year engineering degree or comparable project management and manufacturing experience with large OEM customers, with a minimum of five years of experience managing successful launches.

The incumbent must be proficient in the Microsoft office suite of products: EXCEL, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook and Project as well as have a strong understanding of APQP/IATF 16949 systems.
