Job Description


Primary job function is to manage (using internal and contract resources) intellectual property for the Vitro automotive glass business.  The role will complete this in 3 primary areas: 

  • Protect the IP of Vitro.
  • Need to identify if a competitor, regardless of its location in the world, is using or getting any benefits out of Vitro’s IP without our consent.
  • Coordinate efforts with researchers and outside labs to make physical analysis of our competitors’ products.
  • Identify potential customers for Vitro Automotive IP
  • Identify IP that may be used by Vitro.
  • Generate and maintain a database with existing IP that can be used by Vitro being able to present such work in a way that researchers can actually use.
  • Generate and maintain a database of the patents used by our competitors in their products presenting different technical analysis as directed by researchers.
  • Compare our patents with those of the competition and present differences.
  • Support researchers in the classification of their individual work by classifying their studies, tests and conclusions
  • Understand the existing Vitro IP projects and support researchers with the analysis of existing art.

  • Initial focus will be to work with Vitro executives to finalize IP strategy and develop tactical implementation plan to achieve the desired future state.
  • Subsequent focus will be to work with the Vitro Legal & Engineering teams to implement tactical plan to achieve the desired future state. This will include (but not be limited to):
  • Update internal Vitro processes relative to IP
  • IP training of Vitro employees
  • Review Vitro IP portfolio for value and future annuity payments
  • IP landscape analyses for key technical area
  • Competitor IP analysis
  • Marketplace infringement analysis
  • Ongoing focus will be to manage and continuously improve the IP processes to maximize value from Vitro IP and minimize the costs consequences from the IP of others. This will involve working with legal and engineering teams as well as outside contractors.  Job accountability may evolve to include competitive evaluation
  • Generate and protect Vitro IP
  • Monitor and analyze external IP

Job Requirements

  • 4 years minimum IP experience plus 5+ years relevant engineering experience
  • A bachelor’s degree in Engineering (preferably mechanical, electrical or equivalent) is required, as well as 5+ years of engineering experience PLUS a minimum of four years related intellectual property / patent experience.
  • Glass experience / glass IP experience is preferred but not necessary
  • Intellectual property portfolio experience required
  • Strong and broad based technical skills are critical to success. A strong knowledge of intellectual property accompanied by a minimum of four years related experience is required. 
  • Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written) for interactions with management, associates, vendors and contractors.
  • Ability to plan, organize and share information is critical
  • Must be self-directed and able to manage multiple projects to established timelines and budgets.
  • Must be able to manage activities involving human resources without a direct reporting relationship
  • Ability to manage outsourced activities to achieve effectiveness and cost-effectively is required
