Vacuum Coatings Process -R&D JOB OPPORTUNITY –Engineering Specialist

We are seeking a qualified Research Engineering Specialist to join our R&D team at our facility located in the Pittsburgh, PA area.  This position in the Vacuum Coatings Process group will support research and technical programs aimed at developing new products and process improvements for low emissivity coatings on glass for architectural and automotive applications.   This position involves hands-on experimentation in a laboratory with vacuum systems, sputtering chambers, diffusion pumps, turbo pumps and conveyance systems.  In this role, the Engineering Specialist will be responsible for daily operation, maintenance, and trouble-shooting of vacuum equipment and will be required to fabricate multi-layer metal-oxide coatings using sputtering systems.  This specialist will document completed results and will also work collaboratively with R&D, Engineering, and Manufacturing to transfer new processes and products to large-scale production.  Additionally, the engineering specialist will be responsible for lab materials procurement, inventory management, and inventory storage and organization. 

Principal Accountabilities

  • Purchase inventory and manage inventory storage for all MSVD lab equipment (sputter targets, tools, pumps etc)
  • Maintain and improve vacuum systems and vacuum equipment used in the Vacuum Coatings Research Group
  • Manage laboratory equipment, laboratory supplies, and laboratory procedures
  • Fabricate multi-layer metal-oxide coatings on glass using magnetron sputtering vapor deposition (MSVD) and chemical vapor deposition (CVD)
  • Develop new technologies into commercially viable products and processes and transfer these into large-scale manufacturing processes

Job Requirements

Skills, Experience and Education

Experience with vacuum systems, vacuum pumps, and conveyance systems is strongly preferred as well as a working knowledge of vacuum deposition techniques such as sputtering, thermal vapor deposition, and/or chemical vapor deposition.  Good analytical, conceptual, and problem solving skills are required.  This individual will have a drive and commitment to complete tasks and deliver results.

The candidate will have a minimum Associates degree in science or engineering disciplines such as chemistry, physics, materials science, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, industrial engineering or electrical engineering, but a BS is preferred.  Practical experience in military service pre- or post-degree will be considered with respect to this requirement. 

Technical and Functional Skills and Behaviors

  • Knowledge of modeling techniques and tools is desirable as well as experience with engineering drawings
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, work independently when necessary, and work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Knowledge of statistical analyses and working knowledge of statistical software packages such as JMP and Minitab is preferred

Travel

  • This position may require travel to Vitro production facilities in the United States, Mexico, Columbia and/or China and potential travel to customer locations within the United States. Travel is estimated to be ~ 25%.
